Shamsul Bahar Resigns As MGTC Group CEO

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) — Group chief executive officer (CEO) of Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor has announced that he will step down from his position ahead of his contract’s expiration in October this year.

In a statement today, MGTC said Shamsul Bahar, who has led the organisation since October 2019, decided to resign to focus on personal pursuits and other business interests.

MGTC said Shamsul Bahar has played an instrumental role in advancing Malaysia’s green technology and climate change initiatives.

“Under Shamsul Bahar’s visionary leadership, MGTC has achieved significant milestones, including putting Malaysia on the global stage, ” the statement read.

As the implementing agency for Malaysia’s participation in the (US$16.5 billion) in trade and business leads, exceeding initial targets by a significant margin, attracting international recognition, and fostering global partnerships.

“The Malaysia Pavilion, which bagged nine awards and recognition, featured its centrepiece, a rainforest canopy, paid homage to Malaysia ‘ s majestic rainforests, symbolising the nation ‘ s fervent conservation efforts, ” according to MGTC.

MGTC said another key initiative under his leadership was the Rumah Ibadat Hijau, which has significantly contributed to reducing carbon emissions in Malaysia.

It said the initiative promotes adopting renewable energy and energy-efficient practices in places of worship, which has reduced 286 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to planting 7,150 trees.

According to the statement, Shamsul Bahar also championed the development of the Low Carbon Operating System (LCOS) in 2022, enabling industries to systematically monitor and reduce carbon emissions while adhering to global standards.

“The International Green Technology and Eco Products Exhibition and Conferences (IGEM) which is one of the best platforms for showcasing green technologies and solutions, has seen steady growth under Shamsul Bahar’s direction.

“In 2024 alone, IGEM generated over RM5 billion in potential business leads, surpassing its initial target of RM4.8 billion. This accomplishment underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing green technology and sustainability initiatives, ” it said.

Additionally, under his purview, MGTC released the National Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, outlining a comprehensive roadmap for transitioning to a low-carbon transport sector, including promoting electric vehicles (EVs), improving public transportation, and developing sustainable urban mobility solutions.

“Recently, the organisation supported NRES (Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability) Ministry in releasing a document on technical guidelines for the transition of government fleets into EVs.

“The guidelines contain several components, including planning, implementation, maintenance, and transition evaluation, ” the statement added.

MGTC expressed its gratitude for Shamsul Bahar’s unwavering commitment and transformative leadership, which has strengthened Malaysia’s position in the global green growth and climate action landscape. — BERNAMA
